About Cuyahoga Scoreboard

Government Performance and the Local Economy

Cuyahoga Scoreboard is a project of Community Scoreboard, a 501C4 ogranization formed to promote efficient government, economic progress and a better quality of life for residents.

Cuyahoga Scoreboard will monitor the cost and performance of county and local governments in Cuyahoga County. In addition, Cuyahoga Scoreboard will analyze economic and other data to provide an objective look at the area's progress, prepare public summaries and communicate findings to political officials and the general public.

The Scoreboard is intended to assist individuals, community organizations and media who may not have the resources or ability to analyze systematically the budgets or performance of existing county or local governments without technical assistance.

The major responsibility of county and local governments is to create a climate for its residents to grow, prosper and live a good life.

About Community Scoreboard

Promoting Efficient Government, Economic Progress & a Better Quality of Life in Greater Cleveland through Better Information.

Community Scoreboard is a 501C4 nonprofit corporation organized for social welfare purposes, focusing on promoting efficient government, economic progress, and better educational outcomes. The corporation operates under Ohio law, with a structured governance system detailed in its bylaws. The officers are James Trutko (President), Paul Gallagher (Secretary) and Emily Lyman (Treasurer).

Community Scoreboard was formed in part as a result of significant changes in local print, TV and radio news, and social media that have impacted the coverage of community political and economic news in Greater Cleveland. The consolidation of media ownership has led to fewer local outlets and a focus on broader, national news. Financial constraints have forced many local media organizations to cut staff and reduce coverage. The shift to digital media has decreased the readership and viewership of traditional news sources, while changes in consumer preferences have driven local media to prioritize sensational and entertainment-focused content. Additionally, the reduction in investigative journalism due to resource limitations has further diminished the depth of political and economic reporting. These factors collectively contribute to the decline in the quantity and quality of community political and economic news in local print and TV.

The Community Scoreboard was formed in response to these changes. It is intended to assist individuals, political leaders, community organizations and media who may not have the resources or ability to analyze systematically the budgets or performance of existing county or local governments without technical assistance.
